West Palm Beach, Fla. (ContentDesk) March 23, 2006 -- The Controversy over head lice continues to heat up as parents across the country fight to keep schools from relaxing head lice policies. I dont understand why, when you have a policy that helps keep kids safe, WHY would schools want to do away with it? I mean its our children. Shouldnt we want what is best for them? questioned Kelly Addison, a mother of two in Reeseville, WI. Kelly is so adamant that she has spoken before her school board on five separate occasions, written her government officials and presented before two separate Senators.
When it comes to the subject of head lice Kelly seems to have dug in. What makes Kelly so remarkable is that her girls have never had head lice, replied Katie Shepherd, Executive Director of Lice Solutions Resource Network, Inc. a nonprofit treatment facility in West Palm Beach, Fl. Most parents have to be burned, so to speak, before they see the need for improved policies. Kelly however noticed an increase in cases of head lice within the first few weeks of school and starting questioning how that was possible when they did school wide checks. What she quickly learned was that the school deemed them an unnecessary inconvenience and unbeknown to parents, decided to do away with this preventive step. Its a matter of time claimed one school nurse who chose to remain anonymous.
Most schools dont even have RNs and for those that do, there are just too many heads to have to check them all. Instead we try and rely on the teachers to watch for the usual signs she explained. Itching is one of the more common signs of head lice claimed Dr. Shirley Gordon, of Florida Atlantic Universitys School of Nursing.
Unfortunately the itching is an allergic reaction to the saliva.
Like any allergy not everyone itches and we have found that as much as fifty percent of the population never itches with head lice, she added.Lice Solutions treats hundreds of individuals each week. They know all to well how important some sort of preventive policy is. There are some children who are referred to us that have literally lived with head lice for years!! One such case was so severely infested that she had open wounds oozing with pus. Another childs hair was all matted and filled with lice. It took us three days, 11 ? hours to get through her hair! If not for proactive policies these girls would never get past head lice.
Its for these kids sake, as well as the safety of those they have contact with, that head lice policies must exist, Ms. Shepherd quickly pointed out.As the only nonprofit treatment facility in the country they are making a difference in South Florida.
